Automaton is a mock magazine created for text and image coursework at the University of Minnesota. The goal of the assignment was to create a magazine that features three articles and four advertisements to gain knowledge of text and image through: article layout, image selection, & masthead creation.
The word “automaton” is an anachronism for ‘robot.’ Today it is often used to describe mechanical robots made before or without the use of digital technology and has a strong association with steampunk subculture. The concept is to feature articles about complex DIY mechanical automatons and art, resulting in a magazine devoted to the makers who go above and beyond to create one of a kind masterpieces.
